In the early 1930s, when West Texas was truly considered one of the last frontiers, a Denmark immigrant named John Olsen traveled west seeking his fortune. Using his skills and creativity, he manufactured parts to repair equipment in the oil fields and followed the rigs around the Permian Basin. Eventually, the idea was born to make a house on wheels.

First, there was the RV, which was placed on a truck frame. Later a trailer-house made out of tank steel was pulled behind a converted Cadillac car. Around this same time, a man from Arkansas, L.A. Johnson, came west with his family to find work and apply his skills as a mule skinner. He found work with his team of mules moving oil rigs in the West Texas oil fields. His son, V. W. Johnson, became a house mover in West Texas for about 30 years.

All of these men are immediate relatives of the Big J Mobile Homes owners. Those men carried on and Big J Mobile Home Sales was eventually founded and opened. Today, this company employs Todd Johnson and Rodney Johnson, grandsons and sons of the ancestors who put their ideas to work.
